About Vinyl Flooring
It’s hard to choose between vinyl and laminate flooring sometimes but it is easy to see why. Both are budget-friendly and DIY-friendly. Laminates can look quite similar to luxury vinyl flooring (LVF) planks just like luxury vinyl planks can look quite like the natural wood and stone look of laminate flooring. Yet, when you place them side by side and compare them on a variety of other criteria, you may be surprised to see how unique they both are.
How is Vinyl Flooring Made?
While the surface of laminate flooring is hard plastic with printed design and a core layer made of rigid fibreboard, vinyl is 100% synthetic with a base that is usually made of fibreglass, coated in PVC vinyl and plasticizer. The sheet is then embossed with a print layer on the surface over which a tough “no-wax” polyurethane layer is applied. Sheet vinyl has a closed-foam layer to cushion the board. In thickness, sheet vinyl ranges from 1.5 mm while luxury vinyl planks are about 5 mm, which are both far slimmer than most laminate planks which range from 6 mm to 12 mm.
Benefits of choosing vinyl flooring
Overall, both vinyl and laminates cost lesser than natural hardwood, ceramic or porcelain tiles but look far more premium today than they once did. Sheet vinyl is still one of the most cost-effective choices. In terms of water resistance, all varieties of vinyl – sheet, tile and luxury – are composed of 100% waterproof materials which make them ideal for bathrooms, basements, kitchens, laundry rooms and other damp areas. The fibreboard core in laminate flooring, on the other hand, swells up when exposed to water because it is a wood product.
Sheet vinyl is not quite DIY installation friendly although luxury vinyl planks are easier to install. This is another reason for their rising popularity. Professional installation is best for quick, neat and elegant results and won’t cost you much. Laminate flooring tends to transmit noise hence it is advisable to cushion it with a foam underlayment to reduce both the noise and hollow feeling that can create beneath your feet as compared to wood floors. But one of the biggest advantages of vinyl is that they are resilient so dishes dropped may not break easily making them perfect for kitchens.
